Cannon McCulley: From West Blocton to Division I Football
By Savannah Logan
Cannon McCulley, the 22-year-old son of Rodney and Tiffney McCulley, has achieved remarkable milestones on his journey from West Blocton to Division I college football. A 2021 graduate of West Blocton High School, Cannon’s dedication and talent have propelled him to the national stage.
In the fall of 2021, Cannon signed with Harding University, a Division II program in Searcy, Arkansas, where he redshirted as a freshman. By 2022, he transferred to Mississippi College, another Division II program, and quickly established himself as a standout athlete. As a starting right guard, Cannon served as a team captain, earned numerous offensive lineman awards, and excelled academically, earning spots on both the President’s List and Dean’s List.
However, Cannon faced a significant challenge in 2024 when Mississippi College made the difficult decision to shut down its football program after 100 years. Undeterred, he entered the transfer portal and garnered attention from across the country, receiving 15 Division I scholarship offers.
After careful consideration and prayer, Cannon chose to join Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, where he will play as a Racer in the 2025 season. He is also on track to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education.
Reflecting on his journey, Cannon shared, “It is such a blessing from God. Coming from a small town like West Blocton, you’re always told it isn’t possible. I am very thankful to the ones who did push me and believe in me because in the end, that’s what got me to where I am.”
Cannon’s first game with Murray State is scheduled for August 30th and will be broadcast on ESPN. His story is a testament to perseverance, faith, and the power of community support.
