In a heartwarming and surprise-filled moment, the West Alabama Mayors’ Association unveiled a tribute to Dennis Stripling, the esteemed Executive Director of WARC (West Alabama Regional Commission) and former Mayor of Brent. The occasion was none other than the annual West Alabama Mayors’ Association’s Christmas Dinner, where Brookwood Mayor Joe Barger had the honor of presenting Dennis with the revered Roy Dobbs Lifetime Achievement Award. 

This distinguished award, established by the West Alabama Mayors Association in 2013, is bestowed upon an individual who has impacted their community for the better within the western Alabama region. It recognizes the profound and enduring impact made by a former mayor, attributing their contributions as meaningful, lasting, and distinctly positive.  

Dennis Stripling’s journey in public service commenced when he became the mayor of the City of Brent in 2004. His commitment and vision resonated profoundly during his tenure, spanning an impressive four consecutive terms. His subsequent transition to the role of Executive Director at WARC in 2018 marked another chapter in his pursuit of uplifting the region. 

Throughout his tenure, Mayor Stripling’s impact reverberated far and wide. His active involvement in the Alabama League of Municipalities, notably on the Executive Committee, culminated in the acquisition of the Certified Municipal Official Emeritus Certification, emblematic of his dedication to governance and community development. 

Under his leadership, the City of Brent witnessed remarkable advancements and infrastructural enhancements. Notable among these was the establishment of the Brent/Centreville Senior Center, designed not only as a community hub but also serving the vital role of a storm shelter. Additionally, Mayor Stripling spearheaded the development of a Walmart Supercenter, significantly enhancing local commerce and convenience for residents. 

Mayor Stripling’s commitment extended beyond brick-and-mortar progress. His proactive efforts in securing grants facilitated pivotal improvements, including substantial upgrades to water and sewer systems. Moreover, his initiative to install sidewalks in the vicinity of Brent Elementary School and along Main Street emphasized his commitment to fostering a safer and more accessible environment for all community members. 

The Roy Dobbs Lifetime Achievement Award is a testament to Dennis Stripling’s unwavering dedication and impactful legacy. His relentless pursuit of progress has not only elevated the West Alabama Regional Commission but has also left a lasting mark on the broader West Alabama community.
