In the world of health and wellness, innovation is key to reaching diverse communities and encouraging engagement. To offer a creative solution, BINGOcize is a program designed by Dr. Jason Crandall at Western Kentucky University’s Center for Applied Science in Health and Aging, and this evidence-based initiative is not your typical exercise regimen. Instead, it cleverly integrates the beloved game of bingo with health education and physical activity, offering a unique approach to disease prevention and health promotion among older adults.

BINGOcize is as simple as it is effective: over the course of 10 weeks, participants engage in twice-weekly sessions, each lasting 45 minutes. At the BMC Wellness Center, they meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Led by instructor Ashley Adcox with The Area Agency on Aging, these sessions combine a series of tailored exercises with informative discussions on health-related topics, interspersed with everyone’s favorite game and a chance to win small prizes.

The goal of this program is to enhance mobility, maintain independence, and foster social connections among older adults. The camaraderie in this class is clear as day, with attendees laughing and joking around together, encouraging each other through the exercise, and sharing anecdotes. A laid back and relaxed environment, this class is welcoming to all who walk through the door!

Some of the exercises are done while sitting, and others are done while standing. Marching in place, sitting toe touches, and light stretches while standing are just a few of the exercises one can expect. For those that wish to use them, light resistance bands can also be added in.

One of the distinguishing features of BINGOcize is its accessibility. Tailored for individuals aged 60 and above, the program welcomes participants of all fitness levels and backgrounds. Whether you’re a seasoned gym-goer or taking your first steps into the world of exercise, BINGOcize offers something for everyone. Attendees, numbering between 12 and 14 regulars per session, praise the program for its transformative effects. Testimonials highlight the newfound energy, physical improvements, and sense of community fostered by BINGOcize.

For many participants, the benefits of BINGOcize don’t end when the session does. Armed with take-home sheets detailing exercises to incorporate into their daily routines, attendees are empowered to continue their fitness journey beyond the classroom. The result is improved mobility, enhanced confidence, and a renewed sense of vitality in their daily lives.

BINGOcize is more than just a fitness program, as are many of the programs offered at the BMC Wellness Center — it’s a celebration of movement, connection, and the power of play. As participants laugh, learn, and move together, they embody the program’s mantra: “Play Bingo for the Health of it!” And in doing so, they write a new chapter in the ongoing pursuit of wellness for older adults everywhere.
