Press Release

On October 23, 2023, John Hughs Warren of West Blocton entered a plea of guilty to Rape 1st Degree, Sexual Torture and Domestic Violence 2nd Degree in front of Bibb County Circuit Judge Don McMillan. Mr. Warren was sentenced to 25 years to serve in the Department of Corrections. The sentence is a straight sentence with no probation applied. On September 11, 2017, Mr. Hughs took his girlfriend to a shed located on a property in West Blocton and held her there for approximately 7 hours, severely beating, raping and
sexually torturing her until she was able to escape. The victim found someone to call law enforcement and she was able to call her mother. The victim was transported to Bibb County Medical Center and upon initial examination, it was determined she needed to be
transported to DCH in Tuscaloosa for further examinations. “This case could not have been prosecuted if not for the courage of the victim and her willingness to testify”, according to Assistant District Attorney Bryan Jones, “This victim has experienced a lot of trauma and
setbacks over the past 6 years due to the abuse inflicted by this defendant.”

“Our office would like to thank Ms. Elizabeth Moore and her Facility Dog “Athens II” for being there to provide comfort to the victim as she prepared to testify”, said Jones, “We would also like to thank Bibb County District Attorney’s Office, Victim Service
Officer, Ms. Brooklynn Sievering, who spent countless hours communicating with the victim and helping prepare the victim to testify.”

It is the aim of the District Attorney’s Office and Law Enforcement throughout the Fourth Circuit to aggressively pursue and prosecute individuals who commit these types of violent crimes.

This case was investigated by West Blocton Police Department and prosecuted by The Office of Robert H. Turner, Jr., District Attorney of the Fourth Judicial Circuit.
