In a bid to equip the younger generation with crucial life-saving skills, the BMC Wellness Center has launched a comprehensive First Aid Training program. Spearheaded by Julie Darden, Nursing Home Director, this initiative stems from a deeply personal experience. Julie’s own family tragedy involving a water accident, which led to the loss of her aunt, inspired her to ensure that young individuals are prepared to respond effectively in emergency situations.

The First Aid Training program offered at the BMC Wellness Center encompasses a range of vital skills designed to empower teenagers aged 14 to 18 with the knowledge they need to navigate unforeseen emergencies. The course is built around the acronym “RESPOND,” each letter representing a critical aspect of the training:

R – Rescue Techniques: Participants learn how to safely approach and rescue individuals in distress, emphasizing personal safety as a priority.

E – Examine and Assess: Teens are taught how to quickly evaluate a situation, identify potential risks, and determine the appropriate course of action.

S – Stroke and Heat Exhaustion: Recognizing the signs and symptoms of stroke and heat-related illnesses equips students to respond promptly and effectively.

P – Pool and Water Safety: Invaluable water safety skills are taught to prevent accidents and promote responsible behavior around water bodies.

O – Overdose: Participants are educated about responding to overdose situations, including recognizing the signs and initiating immediate assistance.

N – Numbers to Call: Teens are made aware of important emergency contact numbers, ensuring they can promptly summon help when needed.

D – Diabetic Emergency: The training covers the basics of responding to diabetic emergencies, a potentially life-threatening situation.

Julie Darden and Bess Russell recently conducted the inaugural First Aid Training class which accommodated 10 participants. Given the overwhelming response, the BMC Wellness Center plans to offer the course regularly, with the next session slated for the upcoming month to accommodate another group of teenagers.

The program specifically targets ages 14 to 18, as these individuals are more likely to find themselves in situations where an adult’s guidance might be unavailable. By imparting these skills at a young age, the BMC Wellness Center aims to cultivate a generation of responsible and capable individuals who can respond effectively to emergencies.

In addition to the First Aid Training program, the BMC Wellness Center hosts CPR classes every Tuesday at 1:30 PM open to the general public. These classes offer the opportunity to obtain the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Card for a nominal fee of $10. For those seeking comprehensive training, the Heart Saver First Aid CPR with AED course is available at $21.75.

Moreover, the Wellness Center extends its training offerings beyond individual participants. Worksite Training Courses can be arranged for businesses, schools, or offices, where Bess Russell can provide on-site training for groups of employees, ensuring workplaces are equipped with life-saving skills.

In conclusion, the First Aid Training program at the BMC Wellness Center signifies a proactive approach to youth empowerment and safety. By instilling essential life-saving skills and fostering preparedness, the center seeks to contribute to a safer and more resilient community. Through their dedication, Julie Darden, Bess Russell, and the entire team at the BMC Wellness Center are playing a pivotal role in creating a future generation that is ready to RESPOND effectively to emergencies.
