If you’ve traveled along Highway 219 N. from Highway 82 or ventured south from Highway 5, you might have noticed the new signs that stand as a testament to a remarkable individual. After a nearly two-year endeavor, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has unveiled signs commemorating the legacy of a true local hero, Jimmie Lott, in Centreville.

The process leading up to this touching tribute has been a collaborative effort, involving numerous individuals dedicated to preserving the memory of Jimmie Lott. Mayor Mike Oakley of Centreville, alongside State Representative Russell Bedsole and State Senator April Weaver, played instrumental roles in making this endeavor a reality. Mayor Pro-Tem Mike Nichols and Mayor Oakley personally engaged with ALDOT Director John Cooper to facilitate the realization of this tribute.

The idea was initially sparked by a suggestion from Roger Kinard, former Bibb County veteran service officer. The city of Centreville took this idea and transformed it into a heartfelt proclamation, designating a stretch of Highway 219 in honor of the late Jimmie Lott.

Jimmie Lott’s legacy extends far beyond the boundaries of Centreville. A distinguished veteran, he valiantly served in three major wars: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Lott’s commitment to his nation and his local community earned him the status of a true hero.

Lott’s impact on the community was profound and enduring. He left an indelible mark not only for his military service but also for his selfless contributions closer to home. Lott’s generosity was evident in his consistent service to his church and fellow community members. He used his personal vehicle to transport individuals to medical appointments and even shopping trips, embodying a spirit of selflessness that inspired all who crossed his path.

Lott’s humility and selflessness make him an exceptional role model for everyone. His dedication to serving others serves as an enduring reminder of the difference one individual can make in the lives of many.

The installation of the signs, done by the state’s transportation department, brought the tribute to fruition before formal notification could be provided. However, Centreville has plans to honor Jimmie Lott in a grand celebration in the near future. This celebration will not only commemorate his legacy but also bring together the community to collectively express their gratitude for his extraordinary life.
