Centreville and Brent Firefighters Battle Two Fires Amid Freezing Conditions

By Sheila Duncan

Centreville and Brent firefighters joined forces to extinguish two fires within a nine-hour span while contending with freezing temperatures and gusty winds. One of the incidents resulted in a home being completely destroyed.

The first fire was reported around 6 p.m. on Monday, involving a small attic blaze at a house off McMillan Street in Brent.

Later, at approximately 3 a.m., the Centreville Volunteer Fire Department assisted Brent firefighters in combating a fully engulfed mobile home fire on Aaron Drive. By the time responders arrived, the vacant mobile home was ablaze. The frigid conditions—temperatures hovering around 28 degrees with strong winds—posed significant challenges, as the cold affected the water spray from hoses, requiring firefighters to get closer to the flames. In addition to extinguishing the fire, their efforts were crucial in protecting a neighboring home just 50 feet away.

Authorities mentioned the possibility of squatters attempting to keep warm in the mobile home, as individuals in the area had been asked to leave prior to the fire. The other fire, involving the house on McMillan Street, is suspected to have been caused by electrical issues.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported in either incident.
