On Thursday, November 7th, Tombigbee RC&D Council held a Bibb County Grant Celebration at the Bibb County Commission Office with a welcome of Grantees, Legislators, and Elected Officials by Nneka Williams, Executive Director of Tombigbee RC&D.
Each Grantee presented their project with those projects totaling $77,243.65. Here is a list of the grants starting with:
Expanding Mammal Research and Education at UWA’s Cahaba Biodiversity Center
The University of West Alabama Foundation is enhancing mammal survey techniques at the Cahaba Biodiversity Center. The center offers students hands-on biological courses and research opportunities, including mammal surveys to aid in species identification and contribute essential data for conservation and management efforts. The funding will improve aerial mammal survey capabilities, focusing on species like bats and small mammals, and will support the development of specialized enclosures for them.

Enhancing Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park
Auburn University and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System are enriching the natural beauty of the state park, enhancing biodiversity and promoting tourism. This project involves adding native plants and flower beds to the area. Funds were allocated for gardening tools, soil additives, chemicals, and plants.

Gymnasium Light Replacement
Cahawba Christian Academy replaced outdated light fixtures in the gymnasium, which had become a fire hazard. The new LED fixtures enhance safety and improve the gym’s atmosphere for events and activities.

Public Safety Training
The City of Centreville purchased essential equipment, including simulation weapons and gear, for training in incident response, such as active shooter and hostage situations. This equipment will enhance first responders’ skills and community protection.

Lighting and Floor Repairs for The Cahaba Lily Center
The West Blocton Improvement Committee is updating The Cahaba Lily Center by replacing all lighting fixtures with LED lights and repairing the breaker box wiring to eliminate a hazard. Additional repairs are being made to damaged areas of the floor.

Light Water Rescue Equipment
Bibb County EMA acquired rescue equipment to improve efficiency in launching boats and navigating the Cahaba River. This will help first responders reach those in need more quickly.
