Brad Johnson Act Becomes Law

The Brad Johnson Act, named after the fallen Bibb County deputy, aimed to reduce the “good time” reductions for incarcerated individuals, passing through a final vote after being sponsored by Bibb County Senator April Weaver. The bill, spurred by Johnson’s tragic death, sought to limit sentence reductions after a violent shootout led to his demise. While some Democrats supported portions of the bill, they criticized its inability to address the core issues and provide assistance to Johnson. Despite a prolonged and amicable debate, the bill will have minimal impact as only approximately 14 percent of Alabama prisoners qualify for “good time” reductions due to existing limitations on eligible convictions. Attorney General Steve Marshall highlighted that the legislation signifies a step toward truthful sentencing, acknowledging the significance of Deputy Brad Johnson’s life and legacy. Marshall defended the law’s focus on incentivizing good behavior among inmates to prevent harm to others and emphasized that its effect on prison overcrowding depends on inmate compliance rather than the law itself.

Coach Charles McCaleb inducted into Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame

Charles McCaleb, affectionately known as “Mr. Bibb County High School,” held an integral role in Bibb County athletics, notably leading the basketball team to the State Basketball Tournament in 1967. Throughout his esteemed career, he filled various athletic positions, coached multiple sports, and diligently served as a classroom teacher for nearly 50 years. McCaleb demonstrated exceptional coaching skills and adeptly managed administrative responsibilities, notably as Athletic Director for 16 years. His impressive coaching spans across multiple sports, including basketball, softball, volleyball, baseball, and football, achieving numerous Area Championships and notable achievements. His impact on his students and athletes extended beyond the field or court, instilling character, resilience, and grace in his players, earning immense respect and admiration within the community. McCaleb’s influence and dedication to Bibb County High School athletics were lauded, resulting in his induction into the AHSAA Hall of Fame as a testament to his lasting legacy and contributions to Alabama’s interscholastic athletics.

Fifty years ago, on May 27, 1973, a small town’s destiny changed forever as an unexpected storm descended upon Brent, Alabama. The unsuspecting townsfolk were caught off guard as the calamitous weather struck suddenly and fiercely. In the aftermath, the community witnessed both devastation and heroism. Individuals selflessly assisted those in need, embodying the true essence of courage and altruism. The town of Brent transformed physically in the years that followed, yet the spirit of unity and support among its residents endured. This communal strength and love for their town will be commemorated on May 27, 2023, as the community gathers to honor the lives lost and celebrate survival with a remembrance ceremony at City Hall followed by a jubilant gathering at Heritage Park. This event will serve as a testament to the resilience and solidarity of the town of Brent.
