In a heartfelt tribute to the philanthropic spirit and significant contributions of William Daniel Hubbard (1944-2022), affectionately known as Bill Hubbard, a momentous occasion took place on Sunday, December 10. The serene setting of The Hubbard House, nestled within the picturesque confines of the Cahaba Biodiversity Center, hosted the unveiling of Hubbard’s portrait. This distinguished event was orchestrated to honor his pivotal donation, a catalyst for the establishment of the esteemed University of West Alabama’s Cahaba Biodiversity Center.

At the crux of this commemoration was Hubbard’s profound belief in the power of education and environmental stewardship. Reflecting on his pivotal donation, Hubbard expressed around the time of his donation, “There are a million teachable moments on this tract of land. I am happy UWA will be providing those moments to students.”

Spanning over 2,100 acres in Bibb County, this expansive property features four miles of captivating frontage along the Cahaba River. Within this natural haven thrives a rich tapestry of unique flora and fauna, including the endemic Alabama Croton and a myriad of species like fish, mussels, and snails exclusive to the Cahaba River.

The Cahaba Biodiversity Center has emerged as an invaluable outdoor classroom, welcoming students from the University of West Alabama and various educational institutions. It serves as a sanctuary for research pursuits, extending its resources to scholars from diverse academic backgrounds, fostering an environment primed for exploration and discovery.

UWA’s Cahaba Biodiversity Center stands as an unparalleled opportunity for scholars and researchers to delve into one of the most biodiverse ecosystems not just in the country but globally.

The UWA Cahaba Biodiversity Center epitomizes the University’s vision for a comprehensive conservation biology program. This property serves as a hub for interdisciplinary programs focusing on botanical and zoological biodiversity, ecology, archaeology, conservation land management, among other disciplines.

The Center’s long-term commitment to stewardship and maintenance of its vast expanse is underscored by the placement of substantial portions under conservation easements. An endowment aimed at sustaining and nurturing this legacy forms a crucial initiative, inviting contributions to ensure the perpetual care of these acres.

Contributions supporting the Center are pivotal in securing its future. Donations are not only welcomed but also serve as a testament to fostering a unique educational experience that transcends generations for students, faculty, and visitors alike, leaving a lasting mark on Alabama and beyond.

The unveiling of Bill Hubbard’s portrait stands as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of his generosity, paving the way for a brighter future at the Cahaba Biodiversity Center, where education, research, and environmental conservation converge with a sense of true purpose.
