Bibb County enjoyed a strong voter turnout in yesterday’s gubernatorial election. 41.3 % of our registered voters showed up at the polls. Absentee voting was light with 142 voters submitting eligible ballots. 6,189 total ballots were counted out of 14,993 eligible Bibb registered voters.

1,781 Bibb votes were cast for Doug Jones (D) and 4,357 for winner Tommy Tuberville (R).

All of these numbers may represent record voting in Bibb County over the last 10-15 years.

Only 2 contested races had impact on Bibb County with State Senator April Weaver (R) capturing 74% of the Bibb Vote in a win over her challenger (D). Weaver captured a winning margin in the other counties that represent her district, including Chilton and Shelby County. Overall Weaver captured 60.45 % of the total votes cast in her race.

In the local Board of Education race newcomer Candice Deerman Rice captured 942 votes over incumbent Morris Moody (372 votes).

Several Bibb County offices were elected without opposition, including Sheriff Jody Wade, Tax Assessor/Collector Angie Langston, County Commissioner Ty Corbell, Superintendent of Education Kevin Cotner, and Commissioner Gary Uber.

Russell Bedsole (R)  was re-elected to serve House District 49 and Curtis Travis (D) to serve House District 72.

Election officials were up very late last night, awaiting results from all Bibb boxes and eager to hear final results from neighboring Shelby County (after midnight). Statewide voter turnout was also heavy in this election cycle with 44% of statewide voters weighing in on the contested elections.

Congratulations to the winning candidates. Now, let’s get back to work.
