| “Her impact at the properties since becoming site manager has been recognizable,” wrote McGill. “The residents love just to come by the office to say good morning or just to check on her. She has partnered with the fire department and other local businesses to bring social events to her residents. She did an event with the fire trucks and donated free backpacks to the children at the property to return to school.”
Tate explained at a recent statewide affordable housing conference how her own childhood spent in low-income housing makes her strive to provide better service, opportunities and community-building activities for her residents than she had.
“That’s all the happiness that I want, just being remembered as someone who helped them out or gave them life lessons they can use later on down the road,” said Tate. “[I want] to show them that they can succeed in life and push for something better. I tell them, ‘Everybody deserves more. You’ve just got to want more.’”
AHFA Executive Director Robert Strickland praised Tate for her consistent, committed service. “Good property managers like Ms. Tate set the tone for their developments,” he said. “Her efforts to create a secure, attractive and friendly environment make Cahaba Glades and Pecan Grove a welcoming home for the families she serves.”
Now in its 29th year, the Manager of the Year award recognizes outstanding management staff at AHFA-funded multifamily housing developments. Nominees were evaluated on tenant relations, experience and education, the complex’s curb appeal, and AHFA program compliance.
