Alabama Leaders Support Ban on Foreign Influence in Elections
Special to the Press
Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen and Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter are backing a new bill, HB 363, to prevent foreign influence in state elections. The bill, introduced by Representative James Lomax, would ban foreign nationals and corporations from donating to political candidates or committees, including those supporting constitutional amendments and referendums.
Federal law already prohibits foreign nationals from donating to candidates, but loopholes have allowed foreign money to influence ballot initiatives across the U.S. This bill would give state and local prosecutors the power to address these issues under Alabama law.
“Alabamians deserve fair and secure elections,” said Secretary Allen. “This bill will close loopholes that foreign actors could use to influence our elections.”
Speaker Ledbetter agrees, calling HB 363 a common-sense way to protect election integrity. “Foreign entities have no business trying to influence Alabama voters,” he said. “Our elections are among the most secure in the country, and this bill helps keep them that way.”
Representative Lomax emphasized the importance of the bill. “Elections affect every Alabamian’s daily life. Keeping them free from foreign influence is crucial,” he said. “I’m proud to support this legislation to safeguard our elections.”
Secretary Allen and Speaker Ledbetter thanked Representative Lomax for sponsoring the bill, reinforcing their commitment to keeping Alabama’s elections secure.
