Community Connect: Brian Davis, Bibb County Administrator
By Savannah Logan
In this week’s Community Connect, we’re highlighting Brian Davis, the Bibb County Administrator. From overseeing budgets to collaborating with local organizations, Brian plays a vital role in shaping the county’s operations. He shared with us a little more about his responsibilities, challenges, and vision for Bibb County.
Can you tell us about your role as the Bibb County Administrator and the responsibilities it entails?
“My role is heavily in the financial aspects of the Commission. I work on the budgets (with the help of Department Heads), which are approved by the Commissioners. I make recommendations to the Commissioners as to what funds are available to be placed into savings accounts and CDs. I work with several different people to apply for grants from the Feds and the State, and anywhere else we can find them. I answer questions from the residents of Bibb County (to the best of my ability).
“I truly could not do it alone – I have a wonderful staff (Kim Holladay, Sherri Price, Cindy Deerman, Kenneth Young, and Angela Prevost), and they are the people who keep me in line, along with all the Department Heads. I also work along with other entities in the county, such as mayors from the cities, the hospital, and the Chamber of Commerce, to try to get what is best for the residents of Bibb County.”
What are some of the biggest challenges you face in managing the county’s operations?
“It is always about money. There are a lot of things that I wish we had the money to do. Sometimes we have to save for a few years before we can do something; sometimes the cost is just too much. I exhaust every possible funding source before we make that decision.”
How do you approach making decisions that impact the residents of Bibb County?
“I try to make the decision that will be beneficial to the largest number of residents as possible. Ultimately, it is the Commissioners’ decision, but I try to give them all the information needed to make that decision.”
Can you share a recent initiative or project you’re particularly proud of?
“I am proud of the litter initiative we have undertaken. It provides $500 a month to any nonprofit that wants to pick up litter on the county roads. As you are aware, litter is a major problem in the county, and we have taken steps to help with the problem. But to ultimately solve the problem, we need the help of the citizens.
“It is a small project, but it has resulted in helping clean the roads while at the same time getting funds to nonprofits that are in need of the funding. I cannot remember who suggested it (I do like to give credit where it is due), but we implemented it immediately.”
How do you engage with the community to understand and address their needs?
“I have an open-door policy. Anyone is welcome to come in and have a discussion about their needs. Sometimes I can help, sometimes I can’t, but I listen to everyone. If I can’t help, I try to give them the names of the people that may be able to help.”
Looking ahead, what are your goals for Bibb County in the next 5-10 years?
“One of the things that I am most proud of is working to get the commission debt-free. Assuming everything goes well, we will have a majority of the debt paid off in 2026, with only the jail debt remaining until 2029. We will have paid off the new annex building in five years, saving several years of interest payments.”
What’s your favorite part of Bibb County?
“The people. Anytime you need help with something, help is on the way. The people are the backbone of the community and are always willing to help, whether it’s volunteering to help with the Christmas Parade or the events we have on the square. If I need to borrow tables for something, people will gladly lend them. All I must do is ask, and the wonderful citizens of Bibb County step up.”
How do you unwind and recharge outside of work?
“I have a 2014 Harley Davidson Ultra Limited and a Sportster. When I need to rewind, I go for a ride. At some point, I want to ride Route 66 from beginning to end.”
What values or principles guide you in both your personal and professional life?
“I try to treat everyone like I want to be treated. I believe if you give respect, you will get respect.”
What’s your favorite meal to grab around Bibb County?
“We have a lot of good food in Bibb County, but I do have two favorites: Street Tacos from El Comal and Cheeseburgers from Tiger Hut.”
