“Mary, Did You Know?” is a popular Christmas hymn that was written by Mark Lowry, a Christian comedian, songwriter, and singer, in collaboration with musician Buddy Greene. The song was first published in 1991 and has since become a beloved part of the Christmas music repertoire in many Christian denominations.

The lyrics of “Mary, Did You Know?” ponder the profound aspects of Jesus Christ’s life and mission on earth, inviting reflection on the nature of His divinity and the miraculous events surrounding His birth. The song’s lyrics are posed as a series of questions addressed to Mary, the mother of Jesus, asking her whether she was aware of the significance of her son’s life and the extraordinary events that would unfold because of Him.

“Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will save our sons and daughters?

Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will calm a storm with His hand?

Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kissed your little baby
You’ve kissed the face of God

Mary, did you know?

Mary, did you know?

The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The dead will live
The deaf will speak
Praises of the Lamb
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Is Lord of creation
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
Is Heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the great ‘I Am’
Mary did you know?”

From a perspective of faith, the song delves into the theological implications of Jesus’ incarnation. It explores the idea that Mary, despite being chosen to bear the Son of God, might not have fully comprehended the extent of Jesus’ divine nature or the impact He would have on the world. The lyrics touch upon various miraculous events associated with Jesus, such as healing the blind, walking on water, and ultimately being the Savior of humanity, inviting listeners to contemplate the profound mysteries of Christ’s life and mission.

The song serves as a contemplative and reflective piece, prompting individuals to consider the awe-inspiring nature of Jesus’ incarnation, His role as the Messiah, and the profound impact His life would have on humanity, fulfilling the prophecies of the Old Testament.

This song has always made me emotional – but since becoming a mother, the lyrics seem to hit me on a soul level. We all want to raise our children to be world-changers, don’t we? But imagine being Mary, the one called to birth and raise the One who would change the world forever.

Glory to God in the highest for the gift of Jesus Christ, Savior of our souls.
