The Bibb County GOP met at the Sawmeal Restaurant on Thursday, October 19th for their regular monthly party meeting. Bibb GOP Chairman Jerry Pow introduced candidates present at the meeting who have qualified to run for local office in the upcoming 2024 GOP primary and each candidate had an opportunity to speak about their candidacy.  

The local candidates who have so far qualified to run include incumbents, District Judge Craig Cargile and Probate Judge Stephanie Kemmer. Also running for re-election is Circuit Clerk Kayla Cooner.  

There are 3 seats on the Bibb County Commission up for the ballot, including the seats presently held by Matthew Downs, Jeremy Lightsey, and Rodney Stabler. The Coroner seat, presently held by Patrick Turner, will be on the ballot where Turner has stated his intention to qualify.  

Two seats are to be filled on the Bibb County Board of Education. Valerie Cook, a political newcomer, has qualified to run for BOE District 2, a seat presently held by Mike McMillan. District 5, presently held by Elaine Jones, will also be on the ballot.  

Qualifying ends at 5:00 p.m. on November 10, 2023. The primary is March 5, 2024, and a primary runoff is April 2, 2024. Any person seeking to qualify to run for public office may contact GOP party chairman Jerry Pow for qualifying information. His email address is bibbcountygop@gmail.com
