Fall Armyworms Part One – Pasture and Hay Forages Are on The Menu

Alabama forage producers must feel like punching bags at this point.  The recent rainfall has kept many producers from harvesting their hay.  Now fall armyworms are plaguing many areas of the state, threatening to devastate forages in both pastures and hayfields.  Some Alabama Cooperative Extension System professionals say this is the worst infestation the state has seen since the early 70s.  To read more, visit https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/farming/fall-armyworms-part-one-pasture-and-hay-forages-are-on-the-menu/

Fall Armyworms Part Two – Home Lawns Are on The Menu

Fall armyworms are nothing new to Alabama farmers.  However, homeowners may not be as familiar with them.  Recent numbers indicate that this year’s occurrence of fall armyworm populations is the worst it has been in nearly four decades.  There are several management and control items that homeowners can do to keep their lawns off the menu.  Visit https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/home-family/fall-armyworms-part-two-home-lawns-are-on-the-menu/ to learn more.

Fall Armyworms Part Three – Garden Vegetables Are on The Menu

Fall armyworms continue to plague many areas of the state.  While usually known as a pest in lawns, pastures and hay fields, fall armyworms can also be a nuisance in vegetable gardens.  With high populations this year, more and more gardeners are looking for ways to keep their vegetables off of the menu.  Learn more at https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/lawn-garden/fall-armyworms-part-three-garden-vegetables-are-on-the-menu/

Wood Duck Management In Alabama

Wood Duck

More than 25 species of waterfowl occur seasonally along the coastal and inland waters of Alabama.  Only one species, the wood duck, is found statewide throughout the year and nests extensively in Alabama.  Visit https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/forestry-wildlife/wood-duck-management-in-alabama/ to learn the physical characteristics, life history, habitat needs and management, food requirements, and nesting preferences of the colorful wood duck.

Profit Profiles of Commodities

Alabama Extension has an excellent weekly report called Profit Profiles that comes out on Friday.  This weekly market report covers common Alabama ag commodities.  It contains futures prices for nearby and harvest months, Alabama steer and heifer prices, hay prices and selected feed and fertilizer inputs prices.  Futures prices reflect commodity closing prices as of Friday afternoon.  Other prices are current as they are published.  Visit https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/farm-management/profit-profiles-of-commodities/ to learn more about this weekly report.
