Repairs to the eroded riverbank along the Cahaba at Centreville continue after recent flooding and heavy rains caused damage to a walking trail area near the Bibb County Chamber of Commerce. The site is just North of the Howard Cooper bridge at Centreville on the West bank of the Cahaba River. The lighted walking trail is on property owned by the Bibb County Board of Education and maintained by the City of Centreville.

A community group led by Cahaba Medical Foundation plans to make improvements to the walking trail including building a canoe launch just north of the eroded area. The damaged area, along with weather delays, has added construction cost to the planned project and caused engineers and citizens to be concerned with future erosion control of the river bank.

Acton Construction Company is the contractor that is doing the emergency repairs to the eroded sections, pictured to the left and in this article. The company has installed a fabric underlayment that will allow water to pass through and placed large boulders in the washed river bank. The photographs portray the efforts that have been taken to belay future erosion problems as of today.

Cahaba Medical Foundation is engaged in fundraising efforts to raise money for the matching dollars needed to complete the grant that will pay for the work that is underway at this site. The efforts include much more than erosion control; a canoe launch is planned and improvements to the walking trail are included.

A fundraising event will kick off at the Chamber of Commerce on April 1, 2019 with an announcement at the Chamber Building at 5:30 pm. The Cahaba Spring Shootout event will be held on Saturday May 4th at 11:30 am. Contact Courtney Cox at Cahaba Medical Care for more detailed information at (205) 926-2992.
