An assistant jailer for the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office was arrested Thursday after an investigation involving an incident that arose following a DUI arrest.

Sheriff Jody Wade stated that he asked the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to look into a reported incident at the jail immediately after he received a concerning report. According to Officer Jason Roberts of ABI, the investigation was triggered when the jailer alleged that the prisoner had assaulted him. Following an initial investigation by ABI a warrant was issued for the arrest of the jailer, Ed Miree.

Miree was arrested on a charge of second-degree assault and was booked into the Hale County jail where he made bond and was released. Officer Roberts reported that Miree is no longer employed by the Bibb County S.O. and the matter remains under active investigation. The name of the prisoner involved has not been released.

    • Unreported allegations cannot be investigated. In every County the Sheriff has responsibility for the operation of the jail and complaints should be reported there first. In Bibb County Sheriff Wade takes complaints as a serious matter. If a prisoner or a family member has an uninvestigated complaint against a law enforcement officer or a jailer he can contact the Office of the District Attorney for assistance. If that does not work then contact the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. In the Fourth Judicial Circuit the Office of District Attorney Michael Jackson (Selma) takes prisoner complaints seriously and investigates promptly.
