Bibb County’s football team held its’ annual banquet earlier this week (January 17).

Head Coach Coach Matt Geoghan opened the banquet by thanking everyone for their continued support of the program and of the young men he has been entrusted with.

Kelsey Delaney (L) Kecia Alston (R)

Kecia Alston and Kelsey Delaney, cheerleader co-sponsors, were first up. “We have 28 cheerleaders this year,” said Alston. “The greatest thing about this year’s squad is that all of them had strengths that covered up weaknesses and weaknesses that were worked on throughout the year to make them strengths. We had All-Americans, tumblers, cheer team competitors and dancers. And, they actually got along with very little drama!” Alston and Delaney handed out certificates and Athletic Letters to cheerleaders who qualified. There were only two seniors so much is expected of this young squad in the coming years.

Coach Geohagan and Coach Clay Massey came forward and called the managers and ball boys to the front. “These are the unsung heroes,” said Geohagan. “These young men mean so much to the program and I can say a successful program would not be possible without them.”

Coach Cecil Lagrone

Coach Cecil LaGrone, who has worked with the senior players since they were in the 9th grade, came forward to help with presentations.

In explaining his coaching philosophy, Geohagan said, “We talk more about the types of relationships we forge and what type sons, husbands and fathers these young men will be than about wins and losses. I believe it’s all about character and leadership and this team showed that all through the year. This team ran up against some tough competition and situations but absolutely refused to quit.”

Myles Kornegay (L) Coach Geohagan (R)

Bibb County players earned numerous awards this season. Myles Kornegay made the Tuscaloosa News State Super 11 West Alabama and All-State second team.

Trey Reese, Dexter Marsh and DeShaun Murrell and Gavin Wallace were selected to the West Alabama All-Star team from the Tuscaloosa News.

Coach Matt Hughey presented the Rookie of the Year award and Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year. The Rookie of the Year award is for the first year player who made the biggest impact. Letrell Morrison quickly assimilated into the team, worked hard to be accepted and played at a high level all year. For his effort, he was the recipient of this award.

Scout Team Player of the Year was Drake Sanderson. The Scout Team Player of the Year is given to the player who may not have been a “starter” but worked has hard as he could to get the “starters” prepared for the coming game. This player sometimes had to mimic the best player on the opposing team and Sanderson more than filled the bill.

The Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year was Jai’Qwan Lockett. This is for the player who excelled on the defensive side of the scout team.

Dexter Marsh was the D-LINEMAN of the Year and Noah Hobson took O-LINEMAN of the Year honors. Special Teams Player of the Year went to Brody Seales. Defensive MVP went to Dexter Marsh and Offensive MVP to Myles Kornegay.
