Joseph Lee Owings, RPh
August 2, 1940 – April 20, 2025
Joseph Lee Owings peacefully passed away April 20, 2025, at the age of 84. He was surrounded by loved ones at Bibb Medical Center Nursing Home. He was a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather that will be sorely missed. He is survived by sons Bryan (Becky) Owings and Patrick (Christine) Owings of Tuscaloosa; grandson Ben (Sierra) Owings of McCalla, sister Kay Smith of Birmingham, brother Dr. Tom Owings of Brent, and sister-in-law Diane Lippeatt of West Blocton.
Known affectionately by most people as “Mr. Joe”, he worked as a Pharmacist in Brent and Centreville for over 40 years. He truly enjoyed seeing his customers and was definitely a “people person”. He was a graduate of Bibb County High School and Samford University School of Pharmacy. Joe was also active in Brent Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir and serving as a Deacon for many years.
Joe had a huge heart and was full of compassion for others. He instilled in his family and all those around him the moral of “a servant’s heart” as taught by Jesus. If he could help in any way, he would bend over backwards to do so. A longtime member of Friendship Lodge #83, Joe served his community and profession on many other boards and committees as well. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time on his farm with his animals and tinkering with old tractors. Although we will all miss him dearly, we can find comfort in knowing he is in Heaven with his beloved wife Nita smiling down on us all.
He had requested cremation, and there will be a memorial service at Brent Baptist Church on May 10th, 2025. Everyone is welcome. Visitation will begin at Noon and the Service will 1PM.
There will not be a graveside service on May 10, Mr. Joe and Mrs. Nita’s ashes will be buried at Shultz Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in a private family service in the future. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to Brent Baptist Church, Schultz Creek Baptist Church, or your charity of choice.
