Alabama’s community colleges play a significant role in the state’s economy, contributing $8.1 billion—equivalent to 3% of Alabama’s total gross state product—according to an independent report by Lightcast, a global leader in labor market analytics.

“The report states ACCS enriches students’ lives by increasing their lifetime earnings and helping them reach their full potentials. Colleges also benefit taxpayers by generating higher tax revenues and reducing reliance on government-funded social services.

The report highlights that Alabama’s community colleges support 114,043 jobs, accounting for one in every 26 jobs in the state. Additionally, many students who might have otherwise left Alabama for higher education choose to stay because of the opportunities available through the Alabama Community College System (ACCS). In the 2023-24 academic year, 3% of ACCS students were from out of state, with some relocating to Alabama specifically to enroll in a community college.

While ACCS contributes to attracting and retaining talent, its greatest impact is seen through its graduates. In FY 2023-24 alone, ACCS alumni generated $6.9 billion in added income, supporting approximately 96,200 jobs across Alabama.

Over the years, ACCS has grown into the state’s largest training provider, equipping students with valuable skills to strengthen Alabama’s workforce. Students investing in a two-year college education see substantial returns, with every dollar invested yielding an estimated $5.60 in lifetime earnings. Additionally, for every dollar invested in ACCS, state taxpayers gain $1.20 in added tax revenue and public sector savings, while society benefits by $6.50 in increased income and social savings.

Students and graduates are working, earning, and reinvesting in Alabama’s communities and businesses across the state depend on them to keep operations running strong.

About ACCS The Alabama Community College System (ACCS) was formed in 1963 to provide accessible education in arts, sciences, and trades, aligning with workforce demands. It includes 24 colleges across more than 130 locations, serving over 170,000 students through certification, credential, and degree programs. ACCS also operates the Alabama Technology Network, offering specialized business training, and the ACCS Innovation Center, which delivers rapid skills training through the Skills for Success program. The system is governed by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees.
