In December 2023, Central Alabama Kidz Outdoors made a special visit to Bibb County, where I had the privilege of meeting Executive Director Carol Clark and Rick Clark representatives of the West Alabama Chapter in Hueytown, Alabama. This inspiring organization mentors children with disabilities and illnesses, offering them opportunities to experience the great outdoors.

Carol Clark expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Chip Burkes and the staff at Swamp Whitetails for their unwavering dedication to this program. She also cherished the friendship they have built, and the unforgettable memories created for the kids. Carol shared, “Chip and the crew have been incredibly generous to us. The time we’ve spent here with the kids, along with the one-on-one experiences they’ve had during their stay, has been truly remarkable.”

During my visit, I spoke with Dawson Guy and Weylan Necaise, two long-time participants of Kidz Outdoors. Weylan shared how the program has transformed his life, empowering him to achieve goals and participate in activities just like anyone else. His heartfelt testimony touched me deeply.

Dawson Guy, now a Kid Ambassador and Spokesperson for the program, expressed his unwavering support for Kidz Outdoors, which has profoundly impacted him over the years. Currently enrolled in a scholarship program at the University of West Florida, Dawson serves as a shining example of the organization’s positive influence.

Founded in 2013, Kidz Outdoors aims to create unforgettable outdoor experiences for youth with illnesses, physical limitations, and disabilities. With six chapters across the Southeast, the organization hosts annual events, including youth deer and turkey hunts, fishing tournaments, and outdoor mentorship programs. Their mission is to provide children who may otherwise miss out on these experiences the chance to make lasting memories.

Kidz Outdoors also operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, raising funds through donations, sponsorships, and events to support childhood cancer and disease research. Their efforts extend beyond hunting and fishing, as demonstrated by their first Pro Rodeo event in Pelham, Alabama. Executive Director Carol Clark called it a “tremendous success,” highlighting the dedication of participants and volunteers in making it a memorable occasion.

With a commitment to making dreams come true, Kidz Outdoors continues to bring joy and hope to children and families while fostering a deep connection to nature.
