Chartered on September 7, 1951, the Brent Civitan Club has been dedicated to serving the local community for over seven decades. As a service club, their mission is to create positive change through a variety of initiatives and to support numerous causes that benefit our neighbors and community.

To generate funds that are reinvested in community programs, the Brent Civitan Club has organized a variety of fundraising activities over the years. From chicken dinners and fruit cake sales to raffles and Boston Butt sales, they have relied on the support of the community to fuel their efforts. This year, they are excited to add smoked ham sales to their list of fundraising events for Thanksgiving holidays.

The money raised through these initiatives is used to support several important local causes:

  • Scholarships: They provide a scholarship to the Bibb County Junior Miss program, helping young women in our community achieve their educational dreams.
  • Special Olympics: The Brent Civitan Club proudly supports Special Olympics, fostering an inclusive environment where athletes can shine.
  • Library Support: They contribute to the Brent/Centreville Library, recognizing the importance of literacy and access to knowledge for everyone.
  • Accessibility Projects: Over the years, they have helped build wheelchair ramps for individuals in need, improving accessibility and independence.
  • Youth Leadership: They sponsor local youth to attend conferences focused on good citizenship, helping to develop the next generation of community leaders.

You may have seen blue candy boxes around town. These aren’t just for satisfying a sweet tooth; they are part of the Civitan’s fundraising efforts for the UAB Civitan International Research Center, which is dedicated to research on developmental disabilities. By supporting these research efforts, they aim to make a difference in the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.

Civitan International began in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1917, and has since grown into a worldwide service organization. Today, Civitan clubs around the globe work to improve communities, inspire good citizenship, and promote inclusive service projects.
