On November 8, 2023, an alert citizen’s tip proved crucial in preventing a potential security breach at the Bibb County Correctional Facility (BCCF). The Brent Police Department received a report from a concerned citizen detailing the sighting of two individuals dressed in camouflage and facemasks, carrying backpacks, as they ventured into the woods behind the prison. Moments later, a call from BCCF security confirmed suspicions, citing guards witnessing flashlight beams within the perimeter woods and within the forested area.

Responding promptly, patrolmen was dispatched to the reported location where the suspects were seen entering the woods. Shortly thereafter, the two men emerged from the woods and were promptly apprehended by the Brent Police Department. Following this, the Department of Corrections’ K-9 team conducted a search along the prison wood line, discovering three backpacks loaded with contraband.

This incident underscored the seamless cooperation between the Brent Police Department and the broader Bibb County law enforcement alongside the Department of Corrections. This collaboration serves as a steadfast defense mechanism against the infiltration of illicit items into our correctional facilities.

The suspects in custody face an array of serious charges, reflecting the gravity of their alleged actions. These charges include trafficking offenses involving methamphetamine, fentanyl, and synthetic drugs, alongside unlawful possession of controlled substances (three counts), possession of marijuana in the first degree, promoting prison contraband in the first degree, and criminal trespassing.

The gravity of the charges is mirrored in the set bond for each suspect, which stands at an imposing $3,000,000. Notably, if found guilty, these individuals are staring down the possibility of life imprisonment without the chance of parole.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the continuous threat posed by attempts to smuggle contraband into correctional facilities and the unwavering commitment of law enforcement entities to safeguard the integrity and security of these institutions. The successful interception of the suspects highlights the importance of community vigilance and the collaborative efforts among various law enforcement agencies to combat criminal activities that jeopardize the safety and sanctity of our prisons.

The Brent Police Department remains resolute in its dedication to upholding the law, ensuring public safety, and working hand in hand with partner agencies to preserve the security of our communities and correctional facilities alike.
