In a recent announcement made on behalf of Mayor Jeff Dodson and the Woodstock Town Council, the Town of Woodstock introduced Ordinance 2023-9, a significant step towards the preservation and restoration of historical cemeteries within the community. This ordinance reflects a deep commitment to honoring the town’s rich history and cultural heritage by ensuring the proper care of graves and headstones of historical importance.

The decision to enact Ordinance 2023-9 comes after extensive consideration of the historical significance of the Ray-Strickland Cemetery, which is more than 40 years old. This cemetery stands as a testament to the town’s past and is home to numerous graves and headstones that hold great historical importance for Woodstock and its residents. In recognizing this significance, the Town of Woodstock seeks to take responsibility for the preservation and maintenance of this historical treasure.

Woodstock has a history dating back over 100 years prior to its official incorporation as a Town. This rich historical background has shaped the community, and the local government is eager to uphold its cultural heritage. The decision to establish a Cemetery Rehabilitation Authority and a dedicated board to oversee the registration and maintenance of neglected cemeteries within the town is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

The establishment of the Town of Woodstock Cemetery Rehabilitation Authority, as outlined in Ordinance 2023-9, demonstrates the town’s commitment to preserving its historical cemeteries and paying tribute to the individuals interred within them. This authority will be responsible for ensuring that neglected cemeteries within the town are properly registered and maintained, in accordance with Ala. Code Section §11-80-13. This code serves as a legal framework for the town’s endeavor to preserve these sacred spaces.

While the specific size and composition of the governing board for the Cemetery Rehabilitation Authority will be determined by the Town Council at a later time, the establishment of such an authority represents a critical milestone in Woodstock’s mission to protect and restore its historical cemeteries.

This initiative serves as a testament to Woodstock’s dedication to its heritage and its determination to honor the memories of those who played a part in shaping the town into what it is today.
