A group of concerned citizens from the Centreville & Brent communities attended the regular meeting of the Centreville City Council on Tuesday evening, September 5.

Centreville Mayor Oakley departed from the order of the scheduled agenda and asked the group spokesperson, the Reverend Larry Moultrie, to take the floor as the first matter of business to address the council.

Rev. Moultrie listed citizen group concerns about the recent arrest and incarceration of Latrivia Crews, following an incident on a Bibb County school bus. On August 17, 2023 fighting between students on the school bus caused the bus driver to stop the bus in a business parking lot and summon police to the scene to handle the fighting students.

What happened when parents arrived at the scene to respond and pick up children ended up in a violent arrest and a fight between a police officer and Latrivia Crews. The conduct of the arresting officer along with the actions of five other police officers, who were present on the scene at the time, have been the subject of a number of videos that have circulated on social media, television news stations, and news outlets.

The investigation of the police involved incident has been turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the prosecution of the resulting criminal case is being handled by District Attorney Robert Turner Jr. A Centreville police officer has been on administrative leave since the incident.

Following a court hearing on August 30, Latrivia Crews is presently released from jail and on a security bond.

Mayor Oakley spoke briefly to the group following their representatives presentation and said that he was unable to respond to their questions at this time but were receptive to the group and would be limited due to ongoing investigation in his response. No questions were taken.
