Tuning-in to Kids: Emotionally Intelligent Parenting

How do you build emotional intelligence? Tuning into Kids TM helps children develop emotional intelligence (ei). Research has shown that children with higher ei:
– Have greater success with making and keeping friends
– Have better concentration at school
– Are better able to calm down
This series is a great resource for parents, teachers, social workers or anyone who works with kids! Presenter: Silvia L. Vilches, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Human Development and Family Science, Extension Specialist, Family and Child Development.

This 4-part series will teach participants how to use the Business Model Canvas to assess their business marketing, operations, and finances. The first session is an introduction to the Canvas and the need for a healthy business model. Session #2 will focus on the marketing side of the Canvas, including understanding your customers and market strategies. Session #3 will move into the operations side of the Canvas, including identifying your key resources and activities. Finally, the 4th session will dive into revenue and costs, including diversifying your revenue streams and streamlining costs. This series is open to anyone online, as well as in-person for Bibb County residents. Content will be valuable for idea-stage businesses as well as seasoned business owners. Master Gardener classes cover the complete circle of growing plants! Soil samples, invasive species, pruning, landscape design and more. Then put your knowledge into practice with a volunteer community project selected by your class. Classes are taught by experts from Auburn and Alabama A&M Universities. Early-bird discount of $150 if you register before December 19. Registrations after December 19 increase to $200. Registration closes on January 23, 2022.

Preserving Jams & Jellies for Holiday Gifts

Jams and jellies make perfect Christmas gifts! You’ll want to make plans now to join us to have a great time learning how to properly prepare and process these jams and jellies for the holidays! This would be a fun workshop for mother and daughter or even bring a friend. Participants will receive a copy of our “The Twelve Jars of Christmas” recipe booklet and you will make at least 2 jars of jelly to take home. This workshop will be conducted by Angela Treadaway, Regional Food Safety and Quality Agent. You must pre-register by contacting the Bibb County Extension Office at 205-926-4310.

Year-end Tax Planning for Farmers

The business of farming provides more opportunities to schedule the recognition of income and expenses than any other business. We will discuss methods to defer taxes including constructive receipt, income averaging, installment sales, pre-paying expenses, and retirement plan contributions. We will also discuss accelerating depreciation, self-employment tax planning, hiring your children, weather-related livestock sales, sale of farm assets, treatment of crop insurance and disaster payments and net operating losses. Presenter: Robert A. Tufts has been an attorney for 24 years. He also has a PhD in Forestry and a Master of Laws in tax. He taught at Auburn University for 36 years and is currently Visiting Professor in Extension on the Farm and Agribusiness Management Team.

Basic Estate Planning

Planning for your eventual death and possible incapacity is more important than ever during this pandemic. The program will describe the problems you create when you do not have a Will, how your assets are distributed if you do not have an Will, and the three documents that should be in your estate plan— an Advance Directive for Health Care, a Power of Attorney and a Will.
Presenter: Robert A. Tufts has been an attorney for 24 years. He also has a PhD in Forestry and a Master of Laws in tax. He taught at Auburn University for 36 years and is currently Visiting Professor in Extension.

4-H Forestry & Wildlife Club

The 4-H Forestry program helps youth to gain a strong understanding of trees, forest management, and environmental issues.  It also provides hands on learning experiences that helps individuals develop skills to become better managers of forested land. The program is available to all youth, ages 8-18. Meetings will take place at a variety of locations in Bibb County, the first meeting will be at the Cahaba Riverwalk, 12/11/2021. Club members will also prepare for the State 4-H Forestry and Wildlife Contests in Summer 2022!

Using Trusts in Estate Planning

The purpose of a trust is to hold property after your death and distribute that property some time later based on the passage of time or the occurrence of a condition. The program will describe the tax and non-tax uses of trusts and the different types of trusts. Trust provisions typically used by individuals will also be explained. Presenter: Robert A. 4-H Summer Camp Registration IS OPEN!
Bibb County 4-H heads to Summer Camp June 20-22, 2022. All participants must be enrolled by February 22, 2022 with a $25 deposit. Total camp fee is $150. This is a 3 day overnight camp at the Alabama 4-H Center in Columbiana. Activities include climbing wall, swimming, canoeing, paddle boarding, live animal class, giant swing and more! As the Bibb County Coordinator for Alabama Extension, Michelle Giddens coordinates the implementation of all Extension programs in Bibb County in many program areas. These program areas include 4-H and Youth Development, Animal Sciences, Food Safety and Quality, Forestry, Wildlife and Natural Resources, Human Nutrition, Diet and Health, Family and Child Development, Family Resource Management and Workforce Development, Commercial Horticulture, Home Grounds, Gardens and Home Pests, Farm and Agribusiness Management, and Community and Economic Development. Her experience includes with the eXtension Initiative at the University of Nebraska and with the eXtension Foundation; California State University, Fresno and Central Community College in Grand Island, NE. She currently serves on the board for Brierfield Fire and Rescue, a volunteer fire department serving Brierfield and Six Mile communities in Alabama
