A dark thundercloud gathered over Centreville this afternoon around 5:00 p.m. and quickly turned deadly, as summer thunderstorms often do. Without warning a powerful thunderbolt struck the top of the recently restored and painted clock tower, leaving a significant hole below the curved dome.
Centreville and Brent Volunteer Fire Departments rushed to the town square in case of fire, which was a real possibility given the power of the electrical charge that struck the building. After a quick interior inspection no fire was observed however damage was reported to interior electrical devices and computer equipment. The extent of the damage will be determined after further inspection. Many of the court house employees had already left for the day when the strike occurred and no injuries were reported.
