A high school football movie that filmed at Bessemer Academy and other locations in the Birmingham area in 2016 opens today nationwide, including showings at Birmingham-area theaters.

“Run the Race” stars actor Mykelti Williamson as a football coach and is produced by Heisman Trophy-winning football player Tim Tebow and his older brother, Robby Tebow.

Williamson is best known for playing the shrimp-obsessive Bubba Blue in the movie “Forrest Gump,” and he’s also had a major role in “Fences,” which starred Denzel Washington.

“Run the Race” filmed in October through November in 2016, with many of the scenes shot at Bessemer Academy’s football stadium. It’s released by Roadside Attractions, partly owned by Lionsgate and Amblin Group.

“Run the Race is showing at AMC Summit 16, AMC Patton Creek 15, AMC Classic Lee Branch 15, Regal Cinemas Trussville 16, Bessemer Premiere 14 Promenade and AmStar Alabaster.
